    WHAT HAPPENED?

The teenage Turkey international has had a slow start to life in Spain but he almost wrote himself into Real Madrid folklore on Saturday with an audacious attempt against Osasuna from the halfway line. Guler fought off a challenge from the opposition before striking goalward in an effort reminiscent of David Beckham's against Wimbledon in 1996. Unlike Becks, Guler's effort agonisingly struck the bar, but that didn't stop team-mate Vinicius erupting in shock.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

In the absence of Jude Bellingham it was Vinicius who stepped up to the plate on Saturday, scoring the opening goal before rounding out a brace in the second half. Dani Carvajal and Brahim Diaz also scored for the visitors as goals from Ante Budimir and Iker Munoz were not enough to stop Osasuna falling to a 4-2 defeat. For Madrid, that victory sees them restore a comprehensive lead at the top of La Liga, which will extend to 10 points if Girona lose to Getafe later on Saturday.

  • WHAT NEXT FOR MADRID?

After some fine efforts from Vinicius, Guler and Co., the capital club will enjoy a brief rest period as club football breaks for international fixtures. Their next game back comes at home to Athletic Club on March 31.
